Executive Function and I-CRT
Executive function is the set of mental skills that help students manage their thoughts, actions, and emotions to reach goals. In the I-CRT framework, executive function is not treated as an add-on, it’s embedded into daily instruction through intentional, student-friendly tools that support independence, focus, and self-regulation.
Through the P.O.W.E.R. Strategy, students are guided to take ownership of their learning. They learn how to approach tasks with a clear plan, manage their materials and time, stay on task, evaluate progress, and reflect on what they’ve learned. For many children, especially those navigating diverse learning needs, trauma, or inconsistent support, executive functioning skills are not always fully developed or consistently supported. I-CRT helps make these invisible skills visible, teachable, and culturally responsive, so all learners have the tools to succeed both in and beyond the classroom.
